Interestingly, Fishbase seems not to have a "diablo" that is a batfish, the closest is the shortnose batfish Ogcocephalus nasutus which is called Pez diablo ñato in Cuba. I wonder what kind of fish the namers were thinking of. (FishBase is comprehensive but not complete, so old usage of common name may just be missing.) Stan 04:04, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Beats the devil outta me. While you're fishbasing, can you find anything called a "pomodon"? The DANFS article just says "a species of fish." Well, duuuh. --the Epopt 05:29, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- "Pomodon" seems not to be either a common or a genus name, and OED doesn't have it either, nor several possible alternate spellings I tried. Is it possible that the name is an inside joke, like a play on somebody's name? The vague "species of fish" is unlike the other entries, which usually mention a family or some other distinguishing characteristic. Stan 06:17, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Well, let's fall back on our Greek roots: "-odon" means "tooth," and "pomo-" means "post-modern," so obviously that submarine is named for biting deconstructionist criticism. QED. --the Epopt 16:48, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)
