Text and/or other creative content from fighting cock was copied or moved into cockfight. The former page's history now serves to provide attribution for that content in the latter page, and it must not be deleted as long as the latter page exists. |
The contents of the Gamecock page were merged into Cockfighting on 30 July 2017. For the contribution history and old versions of the redirected page, please see its history; for the discussion at that location, see its talk page. |
I was bold and went ahead and did this merge, since there is a section regarding the recently-added religious content at the bottom of this article already. There is obviously no need for disambiguation here. I also removed language from the Intro section emphasizing a difference between "sacred" and "secular" cockfighting. Intro
[edit]"Not to be confused with the religious, spiritual and sacred cockfight," - What? Is this for real? 60.241.46.15 (talk) 08:35, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
- I have removed that attempt at disambiguating the subject. This is not how that can be done, whether in prose or as a prefacing note. __meco (talk) 06:59, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
new religious/spiritual content
[edit]There seem to be some issues with this new content. Namely, some of it is not even about cockfighting, but rather about the birds themselves and imagery depicting them, and that there may be some synthesis going on. If there is that much to say about the role of the cock, be it fighting or not, in various religious and spiritual traditions I would suggest that such material be moved to seperate article on that topic. Beeblebrox (talk) 19:08, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
- An admirable suggestion indeed in hopes of improving the encyclopedia and it then follows to be a worthwile project. Naturally, the possible synthesis issue to be addressed first and a clearer separation of individual statements that may also be lending to that appearance. All Worlds (talk) 00:13, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
I am going to go ahead and edit the section in this article re:religious cockfighting so that it is at least intelligible. Unfortunately I do not have the constitution to tackle the sacred cockfight article itself at the moment. Niado (talk) 23:34, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
Adding content and some arrangements
[edit]I worked first on the section "Regional variations" subsection "Latin America", creating a new subsection: "Cuba" and adding content with its reference. Later worked on the section "Legal issues" creating a new subsection:"Latin America" with a subsection:"Cuba" to which added few content fitting with the topic. Finally I took the section "In popular culture", splitting the whole content into the following subsections: "In music", "In visual arts", "In literature", "In martial arts" and "In videogames". Then added the first paragraph of the subsection "In visual arts" with some more content, references and images of period paintings which might be of interest for the readers. None of the original content of the paragraphs was eliminated nor modify --Cacucho (talk) 18:07, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
Religious section
[edit]Could someone, with more knowledge than me, cleanup the religious section. The Indonesian section under 'regional variants' contains a decent section on cockfighting in Balinese Hinduism, with a bit more referencing it could probably be moved down? JTdale Talk 23:37, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
Suitable Image
[edit]The firtst image, caotioned Cockfight in London, c. 1808 might not be a good choice. If you look carefully, it seems to be a satirical joke - the two birds are peacefully pecking a the ground while violent brawls have broken out between audience members.2001:8B0:2AF:AAA9:C478:F8B5:64D:8079 (talk) 07:22, 20 May 2018 (UTC)

the Blades on the Roosters
[edit]yes first i do not like it, and why? its the agrivet feeds are too expensive, and my rooster will die with these blades, how can my rooster be experienced as a champion a thousand times if he is wounded and paralyzed? and that favorites with a number of cocks 222.127.97.100 (talk) 06:20, 17 September 2023 (UTC)

Needs Protection
[edit]With the article literally being called COCK-FIGHTING, this needs to be protected. I'm worried, to say the least. There needs to be a semi-protection applied to this article. Else who knows what terror vandals will unleash upon this article? TheCoolAadith (talk) 07:56, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
Updating the map in the Legal Status section
[edit]The Legal Status section of this article includes a list of countries and their laws, and also features this map (emphasis added). The grey category both refers back to the list of countries for statuses not on the map and says there is no data for some of these countries. The map is a bit unintuitive (Why are the legal countries red, and the banned countries blue? Why does grey mean two different things? Why are some countries for which the status is known not colored on the map?).
The WikiCommons page for this file, Cockfighting laws world map.svg shows that it was last updated in January of 2022 and can continue to be upgraded as more information is added about various countries. In fact, the image is in the WikiCommons Category Files that need updating. If it is fully updated with the information from the list of countries, then grey can truly mean no data. I'm not sure how to edit an image like that, but if anyone does, would it be worthwhile to continue to edit this map so that the grey category is meant for one thing only, the countries for which there is no data? Cockfight → Cockfighting – A cockfight is merely an instance of cockfighting. It seems that we generally title comparable sports or activities of this type at their gerund form, e.g., Cricket fighting, Dog fighting, Ram fighting, Spider fighting, Boxing, Wrestling, Kickboxing, Shootfighting, Bull riding, Bull wrestling, Camel wrestling. Lead section obscures history
[edit]Although not incorrect, the lead section gives the impression that cockfighting is a much more recent development that it really is. Perhaps a mention that it is an ancient bloodsport is warranted. 86.31.139.11 (talk) 10:07, 14 August 2024 (UTC)
