(Redirected from May (anime character))

Pokémon, known in Japan as Pocket Monsters (ポケットモンスター, Poketto Monsutā), is a Japanese anime television series based on the Pokémon video game series published by Nintendo. It began broadcasting on TV Tokyo on April 1, 1997, in association with MediaNet, formerly TV Tokyo MediaNet and Softx, and Shopro, which stands for Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions Co., Ltd., formerly Shogakukan Productions Co., Ltd. The series follows main protagonist Ash Ketchum for most of its run. He is a young boy from Pallet Town who strives to become a Pokémon Master; as part of this goal, he often seeks to become Pokémon Champion, the strongest Pokémon Trainer in a region. His journey takes him through various regions, continent-like landmasses that are part of the larger world, and leads him to meet many other characters, who often appear as main characters who accompany him on his travels or as recurring characters who appear throughout the series.[1][2] He is succeeded as main character by Liko and Roy, who accompany the Rising Volt Tacklers, a travelling band of explorers, on their travels across the world.[3]

In the world of Pokémon, Pokémon are animal-like creatures with special, elemental attributes known as Types[4] which can be caught using devices called Poke Balls.[5] Humans who use Pokémon are known as Pokémon Trainers, who befriend and use them for various purposes, including battling other Trainers and as part of everyday life. One goal is the Gym Challenge, in which a Pokémon Trainer challenges Gyms headed by Gym Leaders in order to defeat them and obtain a Badge, with eight being needed to register to participate in a Pokémon League Tournament.[6][7] The winner often moves on to battle either region's Pokémon Champion, who is its strongest Pokémon Trainer, or its Elite Four, a group of four strong Trainers who must be defeated before the Pokémon Champion can be challenged.

Other avenues for Trainers include Contests, events similar to beauty pageants in which Trainers, known as Pokémon Coordinators, compete to gain Ribbons.[8] Those who earn enough Ribbons advance to a Grand Festival, which determines the Top Coordinator.[9] There are also numerous antagonistic organizations that act as villains in the series, most prominently Team Rocket and the trio of Jessie, James, and Meowth, who are recurring antagonists for most of the show's run.[10]
