Should this article be a disambiguation page?
[edit]This article describes many different meanings of the word "abuse," but it doesn't appear to have a single coherent topic. Should this article be re-written as a disambiguation page? Jarble (talk) 19:19, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
- I agree, since many of the sub headings are one sentenced paired with a main article link. CrazyCat138 (talk) 19:16, 20 September 2024 (UTC)

Please consider changing:
"Animal abuse is the infliction of suffering or harm upon animals, other than humans, for purposes other than self-defense. More narrowly, it can be harm for specific gain, such as killing animals for fur. Diverging viewpoints are held by jurisdictions throughout the world."
to
"Animal abuse is the infliction of suffering or harm upon animals, other than humans, for purposes other than self-defense. Animal abuse can include deliberately hurting or harming an animal. However, it also refers to situations where a human fails to properly take care of an animal under their care. This means that neglecting an animal is considered a form of abuse."
The original text makes the absolute claim that killing animals for fur is (inherently) animal abuse. This can be justified as a value claim, but not as an objective truth. No jurisdictions throughout the world have banned fur farming on basis of poor animal welfare, let alone animal abuse - all fur farming bans are grounded in the moral idea that the purpose of fur farming is unnecessary. Thus, the original text rely on a false premise.
In today's scientific community there is consensus that it is possible to house fur farmed species and uphold good welfare status as measured by scientific standards. Here are just a few examples stressing this:

- Not done for now: The text has its source at cruelty to animals, which is the "main" link for the section. The context in that article seems to be in the context of fur farming. Given this has sat here for a month without other discussion, perhaps you should consider a WP:3O. Izno (talk) 01:09, 12 May 2019 (UTC)
Can anyone advice me further here? I believe it's unjust to label fur farming as animal abuse without the context of neglect. While animal abuse may occur on fur farms, fur farms do not constitute animal abuse in itself, which is what the article suggests. This way the article becomes value ridden. There is a statement within this article under the "Domestic Abuse" subheader that states "It is important to remember that abuse is always intentional and can not happen by accident." That sentence should be removed, as the statement "it is important to remember" is not objective and purely factual. Appletunhappy (talk) 18:55, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

Article suggestions
[edit]This article will be more effective if it is divided into separate articles. The current focus is too broad, which makes the content and its context confusing. The term “abuse” is commonly used to refer to interpersonal abuse, so the many other kinds of abuses listed may be unexpected to some readers. Further disambiguation is needed. Suggestions on ways to do this follow in the next paragraph.
The category Types and Contexts of Abuse includes a wide array of other types of abuses. It would likely be more useful to separate these out into two pages. The first may be Interpersonal Abuse. The second may be entitled something like the following options: Abuse (Disambiguation), Abuse as a Concept, Abuse of Things, Non-Interpersonal Abuse, or something similar. For example, the following topics would not belong in the topic of “interpersonal abuse”: abuse by businesses, abuse by legal entities, abuse of indulgences, power, statistics, rank, etc. The section Types and Contexts of Abuse by itself is so long that it may be more effective as its own page, e.g., Types of Abuse, or Abuse (Disambiguation). This page could provide a short summary of each kind of abuse and a link to a main page with more information on each topic.
The section on Effects of Abuse on Victims is mostly focused on interpersonal abuse. The content reads as almost argumentative about which gender is more affected by abuse. More information is needed about the general affects of abuse on all people. Gender differences can be discussed in greater detail after the general affects of abuse are listed, perhaps in its own subsection if enough relevant information is added. A focus on objectivity is needed in the writing and editing of this section.
The page on abuse is of great social importance given that some survivors of abuse will be reading this page in pursuit of knowledge and help. If allowed by Wikipedia standards, it may be a good idea to include a section at the end with resources for survivors, keeping in mind that there are international readers in different locations. Nonprofit websites may be useful to include if such a section is created. Peachykiwimon (talk) 07:58, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
