Cochin China memories?
[edit]this article is nice but there is no memories about the pre-1946 era, what happened before the Republic of Cochin China and the republic was it a colony or a protectorate or an associated state or whatever? why the Republic of Cochin China (not the period before 1946) is regarded as "South Vietnam"? was it because Annam was integrated to it? Paris By Night 23:58, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
- "South Vietnam" as a standard phrase arose at the time of Geneva in 1954, when Vietnam was partitioned. But using the phrase for the 1945-54 period has a certain logic to it, at least if "South Vietnam" is understood in the sense of "anti-communist state based in Saigon." Before 1945, Annam and Cochinchina were separate units within French Indochina and "Viet Nam" was only an aspiration in the minds of nationalist writers. World Statesmen.org has a list of French governors for Cochinchina, but they were just functionaries. Kauffner (talk) 16:44, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
