Talk:Onanism
I created a separate Onan article, but it overlaps with this one. Should there be one combined article, or two? --Ed Poor
Probably one. I removed Jewish from people who know longer perform levirate marriage. In fact, there is still a custom called halitzah by which the levirate marriage requirement is annulled. It must be performed by the brother according to Jewish law before the widow remarries. Finally, as in most interpretations of the biblical text, a lot of later concepts and taboos are attached to stories, though there is no real basis for them in the text. In other words, classical and medieval scholars were seeking to find authority for their "hang-ups" by finding verses that correspond with them. This is certainly legitimate, however, I do hesitate to use the word "interpretation" in those instances (incl. sodomy and onanism). Danny (why am I not logging in dammit?!)
- If you can combine them, go ahead. But I favor a split, because I have something more to add about Onan, relating to the Unification Church concept of "the lineage for the Messiah". I'd like to have the Biblical story of Onan in one article, and the stuff about onanism in a separate, linked article. But it's your call, Danny. --Ed Poor
Talking about sexual matters in the Bible: The article Adultery is lacking information about that term's meaning in the Bible (OT + NT). S.
I can do it, Ed, but I'm going away for a few days, so it will have to wait till at least Sunday night. Danny (still not logging in automatically)
