Level of Prestige

[edit]

Is 3142 really as well known and prestigious as 90210? I know what the US code stands for, even though never having been there, and I'd bet almost everyone does; but I've never heard 3142 used as a sign of prestige in Melbourne, and I've lived here all my life! The word 'Toorak' itself is prestigious though, definately. TPK 22:19, 15 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I've never heard 3142 used either but then I've only lived in Melbourne for 20 years. Geoff/Gsl 22:29, 15 Jun 2004 (UTC)
According to an Insight Guide to either Australia, Victoria, or Melbourne, there were cases of people in other parts of Melbourne putting their post code as 3142, thereby causing annoyance to Australia Post. I don't think the article was suggesting that 3142 was as well known as 90210, which everyone knows through the US TV show. Some people thought it was a phone number. Quiensabe 00:56, 31 Dec 2004
I've never heared it. It is certainly not "prestigious". Some people (ie: Me!) don't even like Toorak! I removed that claim the other day. Somebody in the WWW 05:52, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Rich claim

[edit]

Removed from article:

"There are more "Top 200 richest people in Australia" living in Toorak than any other suburb in Australia."

Please cite a reference for this claim. - Cuddy Wifter 09:10, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The place to check it would be the BRW rich list. --Robert Merkel 16:02, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article needs a major revamp

[edit]

This article is in major need of a revamp. For starters, the quote from the Toorak Village website is a joke - it is little more than an advertisement, and an extremely outdated one at that (the Trak Cinema closed 6 years ago)! Not only that, but the Toorak Village Milk Bar is gone as well. The Village is not what it once was. I get my haircut at the barber shop there and they tell me they're cutting back their hours due to decreased business as well. Safeway supermarket is usually so empty there are often 2 or 3 checkout people in the express lanes, but nobody on queue.

Furthermore, Toorak Road is a far cry from the "Rodeo Drive" of Melbourne - it is basically little more than a through-fare for city bound traffic these days.

As for the train stations, Toorak actually doesn't have one. Toorak station is located in Armadale.Davez621 15:01, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Specifics of 4WDs

[edit]

I removed the following: "Although the term [Toorak Tractor] generally refers to any 4WD or SUV vehicle that is not used for the manufacturers original purpose, they are usually a more upmarket make of car such as the BMW X5, Porsche Cayenne, Mercedes ML and notably the Range Rover."

There is no evidence that these cars are upmarket. E.g. I consider the BMW X5 to be downmarket and the Merc ML is especially inferior compared to the Merc GL. Plus I drive around Toorak all the time and most of the few 4WDs I see there are Land Rovers (not Range Rovers) and Landcruisers.

Guys, I am removing the sentence that mentions that that certain outer suburbs have more registered 4WDs than Toorak. The suburbs listed are very high in population - over twice as large as Toorak, so of course there are going to be more registered. But if you work out the maths, 14% of vehicles in Toorak are 4WDs, compared to about 12% in Werribee and Frankston. Another thing to consider is the large number of car dealers located in those suburbs, which would each have plenty of 4WDs registered, adding to their numbers. Toorak only has 1 car dealer, by comparison. Davez621 (talk) 17:00, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The statistics on 4WDs was the only portion of that section that was backed up by a reference. With it removed, there is no evidence anymore to suggest that the Toorak tank phenomenon exists. I think your research is interesting. If 14% of vehicles in Toorak are 4WDs compared 12% in Werribee and Frankston, we don't know whether this difference is due to randomness or not. Because of this, I think the whole section should be removed.--Knowledge-is-power (talk) 13:31, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

– Clear case of primary topic for the base name [1][2][3] (compare e.g. Prahran or South Yarra) as all other entries on the disambiguation page were named after the suburb. Also the dab may require cleanup as many entries are partial title matches - CHAMPION (talk) (contributions) (logs) 12:18, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
