Is he of German decent? The name Aloysius would suggest so.

Not necessarily St. Aloysius Gonzaga was Italian.--Splashen (talk) 14:55, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe...that might explain why his family fled Slovenia for Austria. I don't know. Adam Bishop 06:01, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)
He was born as Alojzij Ambrožič, which is "pure" Slovenian name, he can speak Slovenian language perfectly and while in Canada, he mostly serves Slovenian diaspora. Slovenian "branch" (sorry for my poor church terminology) of Roman Cathlic Church is very proud on him and when he was proclaimed a cardinal it was probably more celebrated in Slovenia than in Canada. I can list many articles in Slovenian proving this. And if you ask him, he will most probably declare himself as a Canadian of Slovenian origin. In 1945 not only Germans but also many Slovenians fled from Yugoslavia to Austria and later to one of Americas, fearing the communist regime, which indeed killed many people. Another such case is Andrej Bajuk, former Slovenian prime minister and now minister of finance. When he was a small child, his family also fled to Austria and then to Argentina where he grew up until 2000 when he returned to Slovenia.
Thanks! Adam Bishop 13:09, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Why did he change his name to "Aloysius" thats clearly German, maybe he is someone of mixed Slovenian and German ancestory?
Well that's also the English (and Latin) form. Adam Bishop 06:17, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Don't know about his exact ancestry. Who knows maybe Canadian authorities change(d) names to immigrants. One of my relatives (100% Slovenian) immigrated to the USA soon after the WW2 and from Ivan he became John and his last name (quite complicated to pronounce even to Slovenians) was shortened and stripped off Sovenian carons etc. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 193.189.183.17 (talkcontribs) 17:20, 19 April 2005 (UTC)[reply]
