This list is mixed up with Awareness Day list, and both lists seem to be mixed up with national and religious holidays. Needs work!
Looks not really as if we need both of them. --Saperaud 00:27, 29 July 2005 (UTC)
- For non-English speakers, in casu Dutch-(NL)-speakers it is the purpose to have this English page translated Brabo
Jan 15, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was erased from this list since it is not celebrated or observed outside the United States; this is an International Observance article, not an American one. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.227.11.62 (talk) 02:00, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
If this is strictly a list of UN recognised days, there are a lot of dubious entries (eg. towel day) 203.17.70.161 (talk) 05:56, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
- This page has been nothing but a cruft magnet from the start. I wouldn't go so far as to restrict it to United Nations only but also include other international orgs of similar stature such as the ICRC, WHO, IUCN, etc. "Towel Day", "Whateverstanian culture day" and similar rubbish must go! Anything that does not have either a solid cite from a serious global org or its own wikilinked article should be removed.
- On second thoughts maybe cutting it back all the way to only the UN's official calendar would be a good start. All subsequent additions/reinstatements can then be closely "policed". Roger (talk) 07:30, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
United Nations International Year of Planet Earth is in 2008
[edit]Hi - Please note that the correct year for UN International Year of Planet Earth is 2008 (and not 2007, as indicated by Wikipedia). It was originally proposed to have it in 2007, but the UN rather decided on 2008 for this observance, to coincide with two major international geoscientific conferences which will be taking place in 2008. See the following Webpage for more information: http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0014/001413/141373e.pdf
- The UNESCO document you noted is a recommendation. I also found that the year would be a triennium, United Nations International Year of Planet Earth 2007-2009. Yet the name is "Year" and not "Triennium". Brz7 21:08, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
- As a matter of fact: 2007 - (International) Year of the Dolphin - (http://www.yod2007.org) by the United Nations and UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme). (The UN Convention on Migratory Species, together with its specialized agreements on dolphin conservation ACCOBAMS and ASCOBANS and the WDCS (Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society) have proposed 2007 as the Year of the Dolphin ('YOD')) - (Brabo 05:13, 1 January 2007 (UTC))
- (2007)-2008-(2009) - International Year of Planet Earth - (Brabo 05:13, 1 January 2007 (UTC))
There were international year of before 59-60 for example the International Geophysical Year. Was this not part of the UN lot? I remeber that there was also an important year in 1954, can't remember what it was, but I remember adults around me arguing and saying how important it was - either oceans or Antarctica. I was always under the impression that the International Years of began with the establishment of the UN.D.Tzumli 11:36, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

Many single country events in the list.
[edit]I will have a go at removing single-country events from the page. Please help with this cleanup. Roger (talk) 17:19, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
One of those was 'Kashmir Day' — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mittalharsh1 (talk • contribs) 06:26, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
Year of Love
[edit]Seems to have been added by 99.17.218.9 at 16:45, 30 May 2009, possibly taken out and reverted back in later. (And my browser doesn't display anything useful in the adress-line when I view the diff, but this is probably seen as an "improvement" by somebody. Try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/99.17.218.9.)
Anyhow, I can't find it at http://www.un.org/observances/years.shtml. I do find it many other places, now, but vandalism spread. Anyone who can assure me it was really a Year of Love? Greswik (talk) 12:38, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
- It doesn't belong here - see Summer of Love. Roger (talk) 07:50, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
- Removed. Greswik (talk) 20:42, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
International Days From "How I Met Your Mother"
[edit]Whys is International Suit Up Day (13th October) on the list by Not-a-Father's Day (10th November) is not, when both are from the fictitious telivision show How I Met Your Mother?
--Draxacoffilus (talk) 04:12, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
- I fixed it. Roger (talk) 09:07, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
Proposal
[edit]Propose that the list be cut back down to only events that are officially endorsed/recognized by the United Nations or its subsidiary organizations such as UNESCO, WHO, etc. or other truly global organisations with a comparable high status such as the ICRC. The ammount of utter rubbish and "single organization campaigning" that has accumulated here is overwelming the really legitimate content. Roger (talk) 11:54, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
- I really don't like deferring to the UN and its subsidiary organizations, but this article is a mess, and SOMETHING needs to be done. What about requiring that an observance must either meet your proposed criteria OR have Wikipedia article about the observance? Having a Wikipedia article on the observance means its pretty notable, which is a convenient proxy for judging that it is at least somewhat widely observed. Monty845 04:39, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
- There are many non-global events and observances that are notable and do have articles, so having an article is not enough of a filter. Take a look at these: Star Wars Day, World UFO Day, International Talk Like a Pirate Day - all have articles but none is a serious and genuinely global event. Roger (talk) 06:45, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
- I would support this proposal, amended with creation of a list for the entries that don't qualify for mention here. — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talk) 09:59, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
- For starters, let's remove the uncited ones. I'll tag those with "citation needed" and remove them in about two weeks if they are still uncited. Sjö (talk) 19:05, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
World Day for Animals In Laboratories
[edit]This is NOT a UN recognized day. The full list of UN observances can be found here: http://www.un.org/en/events/observances/days
I have left the day in the list, but removed the "recognised by the UN" segment. Scientistchic (talk) 15:33, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
Many days without citation
[edit]I can see there are many days which have no citation. Is it alright or it should be checked. --Jnanaranjan Sahu (ଜ୍ଞାନ) talk 12:38, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
Merge proposal (with "Awareness day")
[edit]In the two articles, both "observance" and "awareness day" are defined essentially the same way. The only clear difference between the articles is that International observance is restricted to observances in an international level, while Awareness day proposes to list not only international but also local awareness days. I propose that "International observance" be merged into "Awareness day", which than can be divided into a section for "International" days (where the content of "International observance" would go) and other sections and sub-sections for observances in the level of countries and their sub-regions.
An alternative would be to delete the article "Awareness day" and simply create new articles for national observances in each country, but then I believe it would be harder to grow the articles gradually because as small articles such as "National observances in Iceland" start appearing, they would probably be harshly persecuted by deletionists.Ariel Pontes (talk) 10:32, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

Why does the tab title say "(*) List of international observances"
[edit]So why is the title of this page showing up as "(*) List of international observances" instead of "List of international observances" in the tab in my browser (Firefox)?
Is that an error / bug maybe?

What about adding the current United Nations day to the Wikipedia frontpage?
[edit]I suggested adding the current United Nations day to the On this day... section of the Wikipedia frontpage here: Wikipedia talk:Selected anniversaries#Suggestion: add the current United Nations day.
Please go there for the discussion.
