Welcome to Wikipedia
[edit]Hello there, welcome to the 'pedia! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. If you need pointers on how we title pages visit Wikipedia:Naming conventions or how to format them visit our manual of style. If you have any other questions about the project then check out Wikipedia:Help or add a question to the Village pump. BTW, nice work on MSNBC. Cheers! --maveric149
Mr. President
[edit]Hey, i noticed u've edited some us govt pages. Maybe u can answer this: why when I listen to the senate do the senators address "mr president" sometimes. i dont think this is the president of the country, who is it?
Parliaments
[edit]Re: a list of members for the first sessions of the parliaments - I'm not sure a whole list is necessary, maybe just a mention of the numbers of MSPs each party had at the start, so we can get an idea on how things are changing. -- Evercat 20:11 May 8, 2003 (UTC)
Question on NRSV copyright
[edit]Isn't the NRSV incompatible with Wikipedia's GFDL? Where did you get the "permission" listed on your user page? You ought to use King James or something uncopyrighted. Geoffrey 21:55, 20 Aug 2003 (UTC)
- As to the Authorized Version, that would be a good idea. However, the AV is under copyright in the UK. The SAERV of 1901 would a better choice. The AV is copyrighted? Who did that!? :-) This SAERV (Standard American English Revised Version, maybe? My ISP won't connect to much except Wikipedia right now) may work, because 1901 should mean public domain in US, but...isn't there a Net Bible translation that's open content? --Geoffrey 03:15, 22 Aug 2003 (UTC)
Simple English
[edit]Hi Joshua. It would be great if you could help out at the Simple English Wikipedia. I've been trying to convince people lately they should come! Simple is still fairly new and under-developed, so I don't know if I can give you any definite answers.
The question about jargon is a good one. One solution is that we should allow dictionary definitions in the encyclopedia (something that is often frowned on here at English). That way, you could explain what the jargon word meant in a separate article rather than cluttering up a page.
With regard to your second question, Simple English is not equivalent to Basic English. We are not trying to limit the number of words we use, although this has been suggested - it does not seem realistic. Basically, we are just trying to simplify things as much as possible without having any strict rules on how that should be done. Let me know if you have any more questions. You can reply here or at Simple.

Backups
[edit]Hi Hoshie. Thank you for the "I rock" comment!! I can't seem to find a way of backing up the Simple Wikipedia. Others are available from Wikipedia:Database download, but that page doesn't contain working links to the Wikipedias that were, until a couple of days ago, running on the old server. The http://download.wikipedia.org/ page doesn't offer any solution either. I would suggest you ask at the Wikipedia:Village pump or e-mail the tech mailing list (intlwiki-l@Wikipedia.org). I expect that once Simple gets the new software, the backup files will be available in the same way that the other languages are now. If you just want to back up individual articles of course, you can just click filesave as. However, this would back up the HTML as opposed to the Wikitext. It might be best to click edit first, and then copy and paste the text into a text editor. I wouldn't worry though as backups are obviously made somewhere considering things are now back up after the old server crash. Angela 03:33, Sep 14, 2003 (UTC)
- Change of plan... Jay is requesting backups of the Interlingua Wikipedia on the mailing list, which Brion says he can do, so I have asked him whether it's possible to get one for the Simple English too. See m:User:Brion VIBBER/Todo list. Angela 07:20, Sep 14, 2003 (UTC)
- Update... There is now a tarball here. See http://download.wikipedia.org and Wikipedia:Database download for instructions. They won't be in a form that you can actually read without the Wikipedia software though, so if you wanted something you can work on without needing to download any other software, you might still want to go with the above method of saving individual pages. I don't know if you know anything about tarballs, but if not, you might find [1] and [2] helpful. Angela 08:22, Sep 14, 2003 (UTC)
Mozilla sidebar tab
[edit]Hi, you won't be able to upload it to Wikipedia yourself as JavaScript is not allowed for security reasons, but a developer could make it available from download.wikipedia.org. Is it available online anywhere already? The best person to speak to would probably be Tim Starling. --Angela. 03:11, 17 Dec 2003 (UTC)

[edit]You're right about the edit on Gavin Newsom...thanks! Scooter 08:32, 3 Jan 2004 (UTC)
That "very good edit" wasn't mine
[edit]Thanks for the compliment, but that wasn't my edit. I just made a minuscule change in wording, from "These comments have used by some question the GNT based on the assumption that Bratcher's viewpoints made into the Translation" to "These comments have used by some to question the GNT based on the assumption that the translation might reflect Bratcher's viewpoints." I think you wanted to compliment Agendum.
Letter
[edit]I think it's definately worth a try. But keep in mind Eloquence said something similar (but to a lesser degree) at User_talk:Eloquence#Ban_me and Chris responded, "I could care less of your political beliefs." The main problem with Chris is that he is overly emotional and focuses on people, not issues, such as calling Anthony DiPierro a troll rather than defending how exactly his images are not copyvio. I, and others, posted more than once on his talk page informing him about our NPOV policy, but he just doesn't seem to get it. Possibly, he has not even bothered to RTFM, as evidenced by his edit summary "* Taking out NPOV" at [3]. User:Jwrosenzweig seems to have had some email contact with him and left him "friendly suggestions" in the past, such as [4]. You may want to email him about this. Cheers, Jiang 01:36, 12 Jan 2004 (UTC)
- I agree, it's a fair try. I attempted something similar at one point, offering to edit items with him (I have a list of articles on my user page that I'd like to work on in the near future), but I don't believe it was read. If you wish to mention that my offer still stands, it may help, but I'm afraid that as a non-Democrat, any words I say may be too incendiary. I agree with User:Jiang, in that Chris is refusing to focus on anything outside of his personal, subjective view (though in his defense, Anthony DiPierro is a troll). A shame, really, because he seems a fair writer. Scooter 05:21, 13 Jan 2004 (UTC)
iBook
[edit]I noticed you'd made the switch on the pictures, thanks for doing that, that was a pretty scatterbrained mistake on my part.
As far as the naming, I can't really claim to be an expert on it. I'd be tempted to call them all "iBooks" and then subdivide by processor speed (or screen size if there are any differences there). I've been more or less out of the specialty for three or four years so I'm not really as up on the new hardware as on the older stuff. - Hephaestos 15:03, 14 Jan 2004 (UTC)
Unprotection
[edit]Bill Clinton is unprotected now. Wikipedia:Requests for page protection is a good place to ask for this if I'm not around. Angela. 18:02, Jan 15, 2004 (UTC)
Good point. Anyway, if it wasn't for unprotection requests originally, it is now. I just added a note at the top to say it's for both. It makes sense that they both go no the one page I think. Angela. 18:53, Jan 15, 2004 (UTC)
Moving Welsh Assembly
[edit]Yes, I've no objection to moving it to National Assembly for Wales, it's how it's referred to in the first paragraph after all! Arwel 23:36, 8 Apr 2004 (UTC)
I had to do a bit of shifting around of the National Assembly articles, as when you renamed it you lost the edit history. The way to do it is to delete the article which you want to rename it to, then "move this page" which will keep the edit history and automatically create the redirects. -- Arwel 11:08, 9 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Infoboxes - MSPs/AMs/MLAs/MEPs?
[edit]No objections to adding MSPs/AMs. MLAs have already been done. As Morwen says, the European constituencies in England are the regions, which are already indicated in the council pages, so it would be more sensible to add the MEPs to the 9 region pages rather than the 388 local authorities. --Keith Edkins 10:57, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)

The Apprentice 1 Episode Titles
[edit]Hmm. This is a bit of a conundrum, as the "Weekly Dossier" section on the NBC site agrees with our titles http://www.nbc.com/nbc/The_Apprentice/dossier/. Perhaps the dossiers and the episodes have different names. Perhaps we should note both. (I notice they haven't posted this season's dossiers). NC Council of State election returns
[edit]I've looked at so many sources that I've forgotten where I pulled the election returns from; I believe it was the NC Board of Elections website and I believe it was today; however, a recount is in progress, the returns may fluctuate, and I'm sure that the final numbers will be different from what they are now. I deleted one of your contributions -- here's why
[edit]Dear Hoshie,
You put a picture of a Qur'an translation in the Qur'an article. Since the article didn't have any pictures, I would normally have regarded this as a GOOD THING. However, I deleted the picture, for two reasons:
1) It didn't fit well. A trivial reason, I could have messed with the formatting. But ...
2) It was a full-cover view of the book, with the name and translator clearly visible. It seemed as if Wikipedia were endorsing this particular version.
It seems to me that it would have been much preferable to have a photo of a STACK of various English translations of the Koran. I could even make one, if I had a digital camera <g>
This is nothing against you, just against the picture chosen. You've done yoeman work in adding open-source pictures to Wikipedia.
Now if you could get us an open-sourced picture of one of the beautiful old Qur'ans, with calligraphy and elaborate colored and gilded decorations ... that would be spectacular!
Hope there are no hard feelings. Zora 06:55, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Republics
[edit]Need your help and/or advice. The British Wikipedian Republican Party sought fit to delete Wikinfo:Classical definition of republic from Wikipedia. There is a terrible brouhaha at Talk:Republic. They won't even allow an external link! SimonP really doesn't know what he is doing. They deleted the Classical definition of republic and created mixed government and politeia instead. The official title of mixed government is a Republic and the Romans translated "politiea" as Republic. And then to top it off the new article Classical republicanism doesn't refer to the Classical republics of Crete, Sparta, Solonic Athens, or Rome but to Machiavelli's ideology. How can that be when Venice in the 13th century instituted a mixed government and called herself a "Republic".
With Jwrosenwieg and Kim Bruning there was a tacit agreement a year ago to have republic be the modern meaning and a [Classical definition of republic] to describe the ancient republics of Hellas and Rome and their influence. To say the least the "Republic section" is all messed up. We need some clarification. I have new information but User:Snowspinner won't let me bring this back up for undelete. (I do grant that a little bit of the Classical definition is original but the rest is not.) I will not let Sparta be called anything but a republic! I will not let the British wikipedian modern republicans strip Sparta, (my heritage and roots) of her rightful name. She is a Classical republic and needs to be called such! At the least, where is the damage in having an external link?WHEELER 15:08, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

"MP"
[edit]Hi. You added "MP" to the main party leaders (added 'MP/MLA/AM/MSP/MEP' if party leader is such') but at the moment they aren't MPs (in fact there are *no* MPs at the moment, although there are still MLAs/AMs/MSPs/MEPs), indeed it is contrary to law for anyone to use the title 'MP' at the moment in the UK. After May 6th they can ben added back (if, of course, they get re-elected!) --Vamp:Willow 14:19, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Ethnic minorities in Northern Ireland
[edit]Sorry I took so long to reply - in my experience most ethnic minority people in NI regard the constitutional question as being little to do with them and very few vote, although pretty much all those in the country legitimately are registered (it's a bit easier here than in most of the USA). Propagandists on both sides will tell you otherwise. Of those who do vote, a fairly high proportion vote Alliance or for the other centrist parties, in my experience a lot of them are vaguely pro-Union but not in any ethnic sense. There has been a very big wave of migration from Eastern Europe in the past 2-3 years, and also a growing Protuguese community (in Dungannon largely) and African community (in Belfast) it's to early to say how their politics will develop, but I suspect like the Chinese and South Asian communities, towards apathy. WikiChristian
[edit]Hi there,
I notice that you are a Christian. Come and take a look at www.wikichiristian.org and consider contributing. It is still small and has very few users. I'm praying that God helps the site to grow and become a forum for Christians to write and read about all aspects of Christianity. It is not meant to be a copy of wikipedia. It is not meant to be purely an encyclopedia. For any given topic, it will hopefully contain a short summary of the topic followed by links to many sub-articles - some containing simple facts; some sharing experiences; some explaining a particular viewpoint and so on.
Take for example the article on grace. It has various "Definition and explanation" articles explaining the meaning of grace. It has a few "Articles / opinions" about grace. It has links for "Quotes' about grace and links to "Songs about grace". The site is also meant to be a resource site containing information about Christian texts, literature, art, music, radio, television and internet.
Take a look at the example article on the song Shout to the Lord. It has links to information about the song, lyrics and chords to the song and links for comments or opinions to be expressed about the song.
The site also intends to explain the history of important events in Christianity. Take a look at The Reformation section. This has links for "Overview" articles, "Opinion" articles, "Quotes" and "Travel" stories.
The site intends to be a reference about major (and minor) figures in the Bible, the early church and today. Take a look at John Stott. It contains "Overview" and "Opinion" articles. It contains texts of "Talks" given by John Stott and links to "Books" by John Stott.
In summary, I suppose, that my hope is that WikiChristian becomes a major reference point for Christians and non-Christians to go to find about any issue related to Christianity. I don't believe that this should be carbon-copy of wikipedia. It should resemble it in some ways, but in other ways, it should be quite different in structure and evolution. I realize that there are different views about different topics - and accordingly, there should always be the opportunity for a person to write his personal view under the "Opinion and articles" section of any given page.
I would love you to take a look at wikichristian and contribute. If you don't wish to contribute, would you consider visiting it's world wide directory of churches we are setting up and entering your church into the database. The point of the database is to state the location of a church with the service times and add a brief description of the church. You can take a look for example at: Church Directory -> Australia -> South Australia -> Adelaide -> St Matthew's Anglican Church
If you don't wish to contribute to WikiChristian, you could consider one of the other wikis related to Christianity that have been set up by other people. These include: Theopedia, Compass or OrthoxWiki.
Thanks
Image Tagging Image:Jhhj.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Jhhj.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{gfdl}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairuse}}. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by going to "Your contributions" from your user page and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks so much. --Agnte 18:57, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

48 star flag
[edit]Hmm... the arrangement which is shown here was proclaimed the official arrangement in October 1912. There may have been some flags produced in a different pattern, but such arrangements were never official. Before 1912, many of the flag patterns shown on the US Flag page are merely the most common variants, as there was no official specification. It would be great eventually to have svg copies of every star-pattern variant ever made (there are several hundred I'm sure), but it's not something I have time to do in the forseeable future, and I'm not sure it's necessary for the Wikipedia article. --jacobolus (t) 00:49, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Hmmm... The main reference which I have is from Serbian and it is linguistic. The correct name in Serbian is "Državna Zajednica SrbijA i CrnA GorA" (president of S&M, Serbian version), where nominative case is used for both members of the State Union. For example, UK in Serbian is "Ujedinjeno Kraljevstvo VelikE BritanijE i SevernE IrskE" (Official paper of S&M), where genitive case is used. --millosh (talk (sr:)) 08:02, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
However, here are other references which supports my claim: IAEA paper, PDF, UNESCO, Government of Montenegro, UN mission in Serbia, Federal Anti-Corruption Agency, An Interwiew of Javier Solana on EU site, etc.. --millosh (talk (sr:)) 08:02, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
The problem with the name is that it is not usual to use nominative case in Serbian in such phrases (genitive is more often) and people used genitive form in Serbian, too. Also, it is a small semanthic difference: with nominative it was "one state which is union", with genitive there were "union of two states". So, people didn't use correctly even form in Serbian. And English translations were bad, too, even in governmental institutions. (The most similar/often construction is UK and inside of the name it uses genitive.) --millosh (talk (sr:)) 08:02, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
So I think that inside of the article should stay something like "State Union Serbia and Montenegro (State Union of Serbia and Montenegro was also used)". --millosh (talk (sr:)) 08:02, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Gibraltar
[edit]The 'Neutral Ground' shown on maps remains an area of dispute, although in practice it no longer exists as shown. To the North of the frontier is Spain and to the south Gibraltar.
Its origin was as a DMZ to prevent Spanish military incursions and basically it represented a distance from the rock where anything was likely to be blown away by cannon mounted within the rock itself, which delivered a present from General schrapnel upon the heads of the attacking hordes.
When peace prevailed, the British built an airfield on our half and the Spanish a football stadium on theirs. Now they complain they want to use our airport, but oppose Gibraltar joining UEFA so we can't use their football pitch.

[edit]Hi,
First of all, great work on the world factbook article, it really needed a cleanup. However, I see that you removed the part about electoral regimes being described in a "purely technical fashion". Maybe this is just a pet peeve of mine, but it really annoys me that Canada is painted as a dictatorship, and I think this is an important fact. Did you remove it for lack of sources, or just because you didn't like the text? Maybe I can try to rewrite it in a different tone.
Thanks,

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Ac.saddamcaptured2.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Ac.saddamcaptured2.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Fritz S. (Talk) 17:35, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi Hoshie,
- (switch to Template:Infobox Former Country)
Thanks for this amendment; I hadn't realiz/sed such a template existed. Looking at it, however, I wonder if the "President", "Prime Minister", etc entries ought to be "[Last/Final] president", "[Last/Final] prime minister", etc...? Apologies in advance if I'm missing something; it's just a thought in passing. Regards, David Kernow (talk) 17:24, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
- Generally, it is not necessary to specify if it is the first or last President, Prime Minister, etc. If only a few people held a certain position, all can be filled in. But if there were a lot, the first and last should only be given. If there was only one person who ever held the position, then giving dates is not necessary.
This template is under constant development, and so I would like to draw your attention to the new extended set of instructions that I have just placed here. Thanks. - 52 Pickup 09:43, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

The color red on that map is incorrect and unfair - keeping red associated with Serbia makes it look like the other elements were seceding from it, whereas that is not the case, SFRY dissolved and its legal successors were equally FRY, SI, HR, BA, MK. --Joy [shallot] 00:31, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

RSV article
[edit]I've done a fair bit of (relatively superficial) restructuring and re-editing of this article, which I hope has improved it. There's still a fair way to go to meet current FA standards, but it'd be a shame if we couldn't get this one back to its FA status, so I'll help if I can. Let me know if there's anything I can do or if you want to bounce any ideas. Metamagician3000 01:35, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply on my talk page. I wrote there in response:
- Great! I think that one thing it needs is some general (sourced) observation about how popular the RSV is now, as the article implies in the opening sentence that it is not so popular as it once was, and is to some extent of historical interest. If so, some very concise reference in the lead to its current level of popularity would be good, with maybe something slightly less concise in the body of the article (including a brief mention of newer edition(s)). What do you think? Metamagician3000 10:08, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
Untagged image
[edit]An image you uploaded, Image:Falklands Coat of Arms.png, was tagged with the {{coatofarms}} copyright tag. This tag was deleted because it does not actually specify the copyright status of the image. The image may need a more accurate copyright tag, or it may need to be deleted. If the image portrays a seal or emblem, it should be tagged as {{seal}}. If you have any questions, ask them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. -- 04:34, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

BrutonJohn.jpg
[edit]Image:BrutonJohn.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:BrutonJohn.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Bob 17:16, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article AM Browser, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at its talk page. Removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, but the article may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. License tagging for Image:ShawnColvin-Live88.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:ShawnColvin-Live88.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 10:06, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

Unspecified source for Image:Falklands Coat of Arms.png
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Falklands Coat of Arms.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 14:58, 27 March 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Liftarn 14:58, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Regarding Yugoslavia
[edit]Hello,
I am writing to you regarding the Yugoslavian "break up" map. Might I say, you have done a great job on that image. However, I would like to point out a couple of "issues". The first one: why is Serbia without the two autonomous republics of Vojvodina and Kosovo? Serbia virtually (I will not point out my opinions on Kosovo) has no control over Kosovo, in fact it is on its way to get independence. Also the Kosovo line is vaguely seen due to the colors. Look at any official map of Serbia. Both Vojvodina and Kosovo are shown with dotted lines. Everything else seems to be fine. Please do not see this as a provocation, as I am trying to only seek a "solution". Thank you, Vseferović 00:15, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

The image (Image:Esv-cover.jpg) was found at the following location: User:Hoshie/Images. This image or media was attempted to be removed per criterion number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media was replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Template:Factbooklink, by Gracenotes, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Template:Factbooklink fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Template:Factbooklink, please affix the template {{hangon}}
to the page, and put a note on its talk page. This bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Template:Factbooklink itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. Thanks. --Android Mouse Bot 2 13:14, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:BartonMark.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:BartonMark.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Replaceable fair use Image:BabautaJuan.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:BabautaJuan.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Carl (CBM · talk) 19:40, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Wikimania in Atlanta!
[edit]Hi! I noticed your involvement on U.S. South-related articles, categories and WikiProjects, and I wanted to let you know about a bid we're formulating to get next year's Wikimania held in Atlanta! If you would like to help, be sure to sign your name to the "In Atlanta" section of the Southeast team portion of the bid if you're in town, or to the "Outside Atlanta" section if you still want to help but don't live in the city or the suburbs. If you would like to contribute more, please write on my talk page, the talk page of the bid, or join us at the #wikimania-atlanta IRC chat on freenode.org. Have a great day!
P.S. While this is a template for maximum efficiency, I would appreciate a note on my talk page so I know you got the message, and what you think. This is time-sensitive, so your urgent cooperation is appreciated. :) Mike H. I did "That's hot" first! 01:10, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
Fair use disputed for Image:Hcsb-cover.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Hcsb-cover.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 02:30, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

An editor of Hungarian Wikipedia told me he needs a map similar to this, but one that doesn't include Slovenia, Macedonia and Kosovo, but includes only Croatia, Serbia (without Kosovo), Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina; and without the inner borders between the countries. I'm not really an expert at map making. Could you please make this map for us or do you know anyone here who could?
kind regards,

Fair use rationale for Image:TagTeam-whoomp.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:TagTeam-whoomp.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. KipSmithers T/C 13:30, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Insular map
[edit]Hoshie, your map Image:US insular areas-B.png isn't really of the insular areas, I think. The article describes Insular areas as not being in the 50 states or DC, and in this map they are colored. Am I reading this article wrong, or the map? Or, if neither, could you fix the map--despite being a geography student, my mapping abilities for Wikipedia effectively equal zero. Thanks —ScouterSig 21:20, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
Disputed fair use rationale for Image:PaulaCole-Amen.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:PaulaCole-Amen.jpg.
Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 20:05, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Template:EpiscopalBibles
[edit]A tag has been placed on Template:EpiscopalBibles requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.
If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes.

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Bible reader asaisoft.png)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Bible reader asaisoft.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Image copyright problem with Image:GODSWORD-cover.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:GODSWORD-cover.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
- That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

One Hit Wonders positions
[edit]Yes, no problem. I put in the italics to note artists with hits on other charts (UK Singles Chart, Billboard genre charts like Modern Rock Tracks) and the footnotes to denote that the artist is a guest on a track they are a one hit wonder for (or if a non-one hit wonder guests on the track). I can certainly help with this. Since Billboard.com only goes up to 1986 or 1987 (they said 20 years, but they haven't removed any data from 1987 from what i've seen), I use Allmusic to verify the positions (in the "Charts and Awards" section of the artist pages. They sometimes use "Pop Singles" instead of "Billboard Hot 100", these are the same thing). Doc StrangeMailboxLogbook 13:15, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Symbian
[edit]A tag has been placed on Symbian requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.
If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. — Yavoh 17:50, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Reb-cover.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Reb-cover.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. SchuminWeb (Talk) 06:09, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

File:DNISeal.png needs authorship information.
[edit]The media file you uploaded as File:DNISeal.png appears to be missing information as to its authorship (and or source), or if you did provide such information, it is confusing for others trying to make use of the image.
It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.
Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided),authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).
If you created this media yourself, please consider explicitly including your user name, for which:{{subst:usernameexpand|Hoshie/Archive}} will produce an appropriate expansion,
or the {{own}} template..

You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Non-free rationale for File:MyBible4SS.png
[edit]
Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:MyBible4SS.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 13:37, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for February 23
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Mid and West Wales (National Assembly for Wales electoral region), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Glyn Davies (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
